green is the new black

Dye Waste
I never thought of myself as ever being a KEEN green bean / tree hugger/ or whatever name they give those who think of the environ more than themselves. But after reading a distrubing article about fashion and sustainability, it got me questioning all those silly questions you try not think about.

What little hands sewed the trim on your shoes?
Where did the excess waste from the beautiuflly dyed dress you are wearing go to?
What happens to cut offs of material??
WHo made that sweater?

With cheap clothing stores MASS producing products, someone must be suffering.

Textile waste
When you think of fashion you think "glam, Style, and money" > often forget the fundamental basics.

Rather than asking
  • Will i wear this next season?
  • Does this really suit me?
  • Will this last?
consider WHERE it came from, how it was made and what it influenced in our society!

summer 2011 - anyone can create

ok so i was recently looking at my fav fashion website [www.ifashion.co.za] and it produced, SUMMER 2011 TRENDS. and these are them
  • asymetrical
  • tiered
  • slit
  • uneven hem
all of the above are the primary "mistakes" young designers make.
for example:
you accidently pinned the back and front together of the dress or your dress is pulling to one side instead of sitting straight, resulting in an asymetrical appearence.
OR
you accidently bought material that was 'see-through' , resulting in you creating more than one layer for your garment , tiered.....
OR
your baby sister came in, gave you a fright and you accidently cut both layers of material, rather than just the one, resulting in you having an 'unwanted slit' > which is only going to tear higher with time
OR
you accidently never measured correctly and your material has gathered in the wrong places - resulting in an uneven hem, or your model just had ants in her pants resulting in your not pinning the hem correctly.

either way, designers have clearly made these 'mistakes' into fashion - such innovation ;)
i quite like it and can maybe see the potential!
